Real Madrid face Atlético Madrid in a high-stakes derby while Barcelona travel to Sevilla looking to extend their winning streak. Meanwhile, Juventus started their Europa League campaign with a 5-0 victory.
European football action heats up this week as La Liga contenders prepare for crucial league fixtures while European club competition gets underway. Real Madrid are gearing up for a high-stakes Madrid derby against Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday. Real Madrid head into the match following a dramatic 3-2 victory over Elche, sealed by a stoppage-time goal from 21-year-old Carlos Espí. Star forward Kylian Mbappé has directly contributed to nine goals in La Liga this season, placing him second in the league behind Barcelona's Raphinha, who leads with 12. Atlético Madrid sit just two points behind Real Madrid after securing back-to-back league wins against Real Sociedad and Osasuna. Real Madrid will be missing key players Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy, and Rodrygo due to long-term injuries.
Meanwhile, league leaders Barcelona travel to Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Saturday to face fourth-placed Sevilla, aiming to extend their perfect start to the La Liga campaign. Hansi Flick's side has enjoyed a flawless run, winning all six of their opening fixtures and scoring 28 goals in the process. The champions build on momentum from a dominant 7-2 midweek victory against Racing Santander, which was highlighted by a stunning Raphinha hat-trick. Sevilla present a formidable test, having accumulated 13 points from six matches following consecutive 1-0 victories over Valencia and Deportivo La Coruña. Barcelona continue to manage squad absences, remaining without injured midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji.
In continental competition, Juventus made an emphatic start to their UEFA Europa League league phase campaign on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Playing at the Allianz Stadium, the Italian giants stormed to a 5-0 victory against N.E.C. Nijmegen. Nicolas González opened the scoring in the 9th minute, rolling the ball into an empty net after an error by goalkeeper Nikolas Polster. Bosnian winger Alajbegovic doubled Juventus's lead in the 24th minute, before Nick Woltemade converted a penalty in the 34th minute to send the hosts into half-time with a comfortable 3-0 lead, laying the foundation for a dominant European display.
