Fleetwood Town Stun Arsenal 5-3 on Penalties to Reach League Cup Quarter-Finals
Fourth-tier Fleetwood Town produced one of the League Cup's greatest upsets by knocking out Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Fourth-tier League Two club Fleetwood Town generated a monumental shock in the fourth round of the League Cup on Tuesday, October 27, eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium. Fleetwood took a surprise lead in the 21st minute through Aaron Loupalo-Bi before Viktor Gyökeres leveled the score for Arsenal in the 50th minute. The Gunners faced further set-backs when 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman was shown a red card for violent conduct in the 85th minute. In the penalty shootout, Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães' spot-kick, allowing Conor Haughey to step up and score the decisive penalty to clinch a historic quarter-final spot.
Following the final whistle, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta did not hide his disappointment at the embarrassing defeat. Arteta characterized the result as "a very sad day" for the North London club, while offering credit to the underdogs. "First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through the next round," stated Arteta as Arsenal exited the tournament unexpectedly.
