European Football Roundup: Kane Agrees Bayern Extension, Olise Inspires France Comeback, and Golden Boy Shortlist Announced
Harry Kane agrees a contract extension in principle with Bayern Munich until 2029, Michael Olise shines in France's 4-1 comeback win over Belgium, and Pau Cubarsí leads the 2026 Golden Boy shortlist.
Bayern Munich and England captain Harry Kane have reached a breakthrough in principle over a contract extension that will keep the striker at the Bavarian club until the summer of 2029. Negotiations between Bayern's management and the 33-year-old forward have entered their final phase, with only final details regarding salary and specific clauses remaining to be settled. Kane, who moved to Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, has established himself as an indispensable figure for the German giants, scoring 152 goals in 154 official appearances.
In international action, Michael Olise delivered a stellar performance to inspire France to a stunning 4-1 comeback victory over Belgium in their UEFA Nations League Group A1 match at the Stade de France. Belgium initially took the lead in the 35th minute through Dodi Lukébakio, but France launched an overwhelming late charge, scoring four goals within a 14-minute window. Substitute Désiré Doué equalized in the 77th minute before setting up Rayan Cherki to put Les Bleus ahead in the 81st minute. Olise then sealed the victory with a late brace, finding the net in the 88th minute and in stoppage time (90+1'). Following the clash, France head coach Zinedine Zidane hailed the Bayern winger's performance, remarking that what Olise is doing is simply exceptional.
Elsewhere in European football, Italian publication Tuttosport announced the final 25-man shortlist for the 2026 Golden Boy award in Venice, with Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí leading the rankings as the favorite. Notably, Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal was left off the 25-player list due to award rules stipulating that a player cannot win the honor twice, following his previous victory in 2024. Barcelona led all clubs with three candidates on the shortlist—Cubarsí, Marc Bernal, and Xavi Espart—while Real Madrid featured Yan Diomande and Endrick.
