Manchester City Found Guilty of Financial Rule Breaches; Spain Thrash Croatia 4-1 in Nations League
An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of financial breaches across nine seasons, while Spain maintained a perfect Nations League start with a 4-1 win over Croatia thanks to a Lamine Yamal double.
European football has been shaken by a major landmark ruling as an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules. The breaches occurred over a nine-season period between 2009–10 and 2017–18. According to the commission's findings, the club arranged "sham" contracts with commercial partners in order to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs by over £900 million, while filing misstated accounts to hide its true financial state during this decade-long span. Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters stated: "The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade." Manchester City issued an official statement stating the club is "both disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League Commission" and confirmed plans to pursue an appeal.
In international football action, Spain delivered a commanding performance to defeat Croatia 4-1 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium in Seville, maintaining their perfect start in UEFA Nations League Group A3. Lamine Yamal starred for La Roja, opening the scoring early in the 2nd minute before Dion Drena Beljo scored a brief equalizer for Croatia in the 28th minute. Yamal then provided a fine assist for Marc Pubill's header in the 31st minute, restoring Spain's lead.
Yamal completed his brace in the 63rd minute with an impressive second goal, before Nico Williams wrapped up the resounding victory for Spain in the 89th minute. Following the match, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his squad's ongoing momentum and development, stating: "What this generation of footballers is achieving has great merit. They are constantly striving to improve."
