Ruud van Nistelrooy Leads Manchester United to 5-2 Carabao Cup Win Over Leicester City
Manchester United kicked off the post-Erik ten Hag era in emphatic fashion as interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy guided the Red Devils to an entertaining 5-2 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Manchester United delivered an exhilarating attacking performance in their first game since the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, cruising to a 5-2 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Under the temporary guidance of club icon Ruud van Nistelrooy, United struck four times in a breathless first half. Casemiro ignited the evening with a breathtaking 30-yard curler into the top corner in the 15th minute, before Alejandro Garnacho doubled the advantage by finishing clinically from a Diogo Dalot cross.
Although Bilal El Khannouss pulled one back for Steve Cooper's Leicester, United responded ruthlessly. Bruno Fernandes netted via a deflected free-kick, and Casemiro grabbed his second of the night by converting a rebound after his initial header struck both posts. Conor Coady reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, but Fernandes capitalized on a defensive blunder before the hour mark to round the goalkeeper and secure his brace.
"I came here as an assistant to help the club, and now in this role, I'm helping as long as I am needed," Van Nistelrooy said after the final whistle. "To score five goals... all of a sudden we had some luck on our side, and that made it a great night for everyone involved."
