Erling Haaland Early Strike Fires Manchester City Past Southampton to Claim Premier League Summit
Erling Haaland's acrobatic fifth-minute finish proved decisive as Manchester City edged Southampton 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium to leapfrog Liverpool and claim top spot in the Premier League.
Manchester City climbed to the summit of the Premier League table after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over struggling Southampton at the Etihad Stadium.
Erling Haaland ended his mini-drought of three league games without a goal in just the fifth minute. Meeting a clipped cross from Matheus Nunes on the left wing, the Norwegian striker held off defender Jan Bednarek before hooking a high volley into the roof of Aaron Ramsdale's net while tumbling to the turf. The strike took Haaland's league tally to 11 goals in nine matches.
Despite City enjoying dominant possession and creating several openings, Southampton remained competitive and threatened on the counter-attack. The visitors nearly snatched a dramatic equalizer on the stroke of half-time when Cameron Archer broke clean through on goal following a City defensive turnover, only to see his powerful drive rattle off Ederson's crossbar.
City pressed for a cushion after the break, with Ramsdale making multiple sharp saves and Haaland missing two close-range opportunities. However, Pep Guardiola's men comfortably managed the closing stages to seal all three points. The victory lifts the reigning champions to 23 points from nine fixtures, two points ahead of Liverpool ahead of the Reds' high-stakes showdown against Arsenal.
